Arizona colonies should be assumed Africanized. This is the one to never handle yourself.
Cockroaches
Two completely different problems wearing the same name. The fix depends entirely on which you have.
Rodents
Roof rats, pack rats and mice. Wiring damage and contamination, not just noise in the attic.
Ranked by what it costs to ignore
- Africanized bees — the only genuine risk to life on this page. An established colony in a wall or water meter box near where children play is urgent, not a scheduling item.
- Termites — structural damage accumulates silently over years. Treatment runs into the hundreds; unnoticed damage runs into the thousands.
- Rodents — chewed wiring causes fires and dead ones in a wall void are a genuinely memorable experience. Also the fastest to escalate: a pair becomes a colony in a season.
- Scorpions — painful and frightening, dangerous mainly to small children, but they do not damage the building. Full scorpion guide here.
- Roaches — a hygiene and allergy problem indoors, largely cosmetic when it is the outdoor species wandering in.
Things that only make sense in the low desert
There is no off-season. Yuma winters do not get cold enough to suppress much. Termites forage year-round, roaches breed year-round, and bark scorpions only slow down. Quarterly service is genuinely quarterly here, not a summer product sold as a year-round plan.
Water is the whole story. In a place with a few inches of rain a year, any reliable moisture — a dripping bibb, an AC condensate line, a leaking valve box, over-watered landscaping — concentrates every insect for a long way around. Fixing a drip does more than a year of spraying.
Block walls connect everything. Hollow block runs continuously along property lines, and it is a highway for scorpions, roaches and rodents alike, sheltered from heat and predators the entire length.
