Cockroaches in Yuma
Almost every wasted roach treatment in Yuma comes from the same mistake: treating the wrong species. The big one from outside and the small one in the kitchen are entirely different problems, and the approach that fixes one does nothing for the other.

Big, 1.5–2 inches, reddish-brown
American cockroach. Comes from the sewer, storm drains, irrigation boxes and grease traps. Flies clumsily. Usually found in bathrooms, laundries and garages, at night, singly. This is an outdoor insect that got in.
Small, about half an inch, tan with two dark stripes
German cockroach. Lives indoors, entirely dependent on your kitchen. Never arrives on its own — it comes in with cardboard, groceries, appliances or from a shared wall. Seeing one in daylight means a large population.
American roaches: this is a sealing problem
They are breeding in the sewer and in irrigation infrastructure, not in your house, and you are not going to treat the city's storm drains. What you can do is close the routes and remove the attractants:
- Floor drains and unused traps. A guest bathroom nobody uses has a dry P-trap, which is an open pipe from the sewer into your house. Pour a litre of water down every unused drain monthly. This one habit fixes a surprising share of Yuma roach calls.
- Seal around pipe penetrations under sinks and behind the washer.
- Garage threshold and door sweeps — the same work that keeps scorpions out. Checklist here.
- Lids seated on water meter and irrigation valve boxes, which are where they congregate outdoors.
- Fix drips. In a place this dry, the only reason they come to your house is water.
Perimeter residual treatment helps as a backstop and is worth having. On its own, without the sealing, it is a subscription rather than a solution.
German roaches: this is an indoor job
Completely different discipline. They live in the warm cavities of the kitchen — behind the fridge motor, under the dishwasher, inside the hinges of cabinet doors, in the microwave's vent. Spraying baseboards accomplishes almost nothing and can scatter them into neighbouring rooms.
What works is gel bait placed in the harbourage, in many small placements, combined with an insect growth regulator so the next generation cannot mature. It takes weeks and several visits, not one appointment. Be suspicious of anyone who promises a single-visit fix.
Yuma specifics
There is no winter die-off here, so a population that survives to December is not going to be thinned by weather. And around Somerton and the farming communities, irrigation cycles push American roaches out of the ground in waves — if your roach sightings cluster a few days after the neighbouring field is watered, that is the source, and the fix is at your perimeter rather than in your kitchen.
